I have good news (of sorts)!

I have successfully reproduced your crash by building x264 v123 and libav 0.8.7
using gcc 4.8.1.

Applying the upstream patch mentioned earlier to x264 and rebuilding it is
enough to correct the issue, or optionally upgrade to v133 or higher of x264
where the fix is already present.

Are you able to open a ticket with the Kubuntu folks to let them know their
x264 package needs this fix applied?

I'm also wondering if Ubuntu, Debian, etc. should be notified as well. It looks
like x264 v133 has already moved to testing on Debian (see the 'News' section
here: http://packages.qa.debian.org/x/x264.html), but it might be quite some
time before it floats downstream to your distribution. Additionally, if those
other distributions don't build their packages with gcc 4.8.x this issue does
not occur.
