Ah, now I see the error in your second post.

The problem is that the dvd subs are bitmaps, while the default subtitle codec
for matroska is ASS, which is text-based. Obviously you cannot (easily) turn
one into the other, so encoding fails. -c:s copy will make it copy the subtitle
streams without reencoding.
