Summary: Output progress information to user-specified location
           Product: Libav
           Version: git HEAD
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: Normal
         Component: utilities
        AssignedTo: bugzilla at libav.org
        ReportedBy: shaddy at chunkofwood.com

I am integrating avconv into an encoding project where it is important to grab
errors and progress information from the avconv process. Currently, I can
either hide the progress (stats) so that only errors are written to STDERR or I
can output everything to STDERR. If I output everything, then my application
cannot differentiate the errors from the rest of the output. Therefore, I
suppress the stats in order to read errors. I would like to be able to get
progress information from a different output. This can be STDOUT, a custom
descriptor, or a file.

Suggested behavior:

Enable stats, output to STDERR:
-stats

Enable stats, output to STDERR:
-stats 1

Disable stats:
-stats 0

Enable stats, output to specified descriptor:
-stats pipe:[number]

Enable stats, output to specified file:
-stats /tmp/avconv-progress
