Interestingly, the folks at FFmpeg couldn't reproduce any of the claimed 1-3%
difference for mpeg2 or mpeg4 content, and have now reverted that change.

For mpeg12, the difference in code is of 4 shifts + 1 test being removed.
There is no way 4 shifts + additions (all done within one single instruction
with most modern CPUs) would induce a 3% speed loss.

As such, I would even question the validity of the original tests (assuming any
benchmarks weren't made up)

Mans, commercial detection has been in use in MythTV for almost 10 years using
that method (we also use it to extract subtitles), you can't just claim that
lowres decoding is unsuitable for any type of analysis

But I guess, you guys have made up your mind... luckily, we have a different
avenue now.
