Aw crap, replied to the wrong bug. Sorry about the noise.

What I wanted to write here was:

I see the encoder that gets used is mpeg4 and you're not supplying any
video encoding options. This mean that defaults get used and those are
pretty horrible. This is arguably a bug and should most certainly be
fixed, but it's been that way since forever.

So my guess would be that your previous version was compiled with
libx264 and your current one is not for whatever reason. The solution is
to rebuild your avconv with libx264. Then it should be selected
automatically and its default settings are quite reasonable.
