Well, these are at least 3 differences:
1) Git Head version vs. (surely older) version from Ubuntu repositories. If
this makes the difference, then the Ubuntu package maintainer is to be
informed.
2) PPC64 versus Intel x86 - I run two somewhat older Athlon XP machines. Not
tried the same on Intel processor yet.
3) RedHat vs. Ubuntu. RedHat is certainly more "bleeding edge" than Ubuntu,
though Ubuntu is not just old-fashioned. Maybe there is some difference in the
glibc as well!

Further, I'm not exactly sure how to do what you suggested. I'm just a user and
not much into programming, nor have I ever worked with valgrind. (Besides: is
it a good idea to introduce another piece of software? not sure...)

Getting debug symbols should be done with installing the *-dev packages (and
some more stuff, like at least build-essentials package), and then recompiling
the package with appropriate options. I guess I did this once in the past, but
long ago. Would have to regather the exact procedure first, how to do this in
Ubuntu.
Maybe someone else can drop in with this? If not, I'll give it a try as soon as
I can.
I may also supply a piece of sample video with which the fault reproduceably
occurs.
